Montreal City Maps

Boulanger-bassin B&B, a Select Bed and Breakfast, is located in the Plateau Mont-Royal Arrondisement, just a ten-minute walk to the Mont-Royal station on the Orange Line of the Métro.

For the Bicyclist

We are the only B&B found right on the Bike Path. Known as the “Route verte”, the network of bicycle paths is a wonderful way to discover the Island of Montreal. La Maison des cyclistes is located less than a block away, at the foot of our street facing Lafontaine Park. La Maison is the headquarters of La Route verte and the major annual cycling event known as Le Tour de Île de Montreal. At La Maison des cyclistes you can find City Maps detailing the city’s network of bike paths and most of the attractions the City of Montreal offers. (Link to www.velo.qc.ca)

If bicycling is your sort of thing, a short ride on La Route verte brings you to the Jean Talon farmers market and Little Italy. A wonderful alternative is to pedal down to Old Montreal, over to the Atwater Market, and then along the Lachine Canal, which has recently been reopened for pleasure boating.

Le Tour de l’ile de Montréal is held in the first week of June. It brings families and friends together for a week of adventure on wheels. Please use the link to their website if you want to learn more. Hiring a bike from one of many shops in the neighbourhood is a simple matter, or you can bring own bike. You can store your bike/rental overnight in my backyard.

Maps

Most Montreal city maps can be obtained free of charge at the Montreal Tourist Information Center facing Dominion Square in Downtown Montreal at Peel and Ste.Catherine streets. There, multilingual agents will help you to familiarize yourself with the City of Montreal. I can help as well and look forward to doing so!

The best Montreal City Map relative to Boulanger-bassin B&B is found on this website.

Mount Royal Park

Beautiful Mount Royal with its huge acreage of parkland is twenty minutes on foot along the fascinating avenue Mont-Royal with its wide variety of shops and restaurants. You can also take the #11 (Montagne) bus. It stops a couple of blocks from the B&B and goes right up to the Belvedere, Beaver Lake, and le chalet de la montagne. Don't forget to let the bus driver know you want the Beaver Lake Stop!! Otherwise you'll end up on the other side of the mountain, but next door to St. Joseph’s Oratory.

Other Popular Sites to Visit

Most guests enjoy visiting Montreal’s world-famous Botanical Gardens, with its renowned Insectaurium, and the Biodome and the Olympic Stadium (built for the 1976 Summer Olympics) just across the street. All this can easily be reached with the #97 (Mont-Royal) bus; it stops three blocks from Boulanger-bassin B&B. Or you can ride over along the Rachel Street Path.

Orienting Yourself in Montreal

Taking a closer look at a Montreal City Map you'll discover the Island and City of Montreal sit off axis so to speak. It’s the only place in the world I know of where the sun rises in the south! Hence our Sunrise Room. Therefore when referring to a Montreal City Map, try turning the page clockwise 30 degrees to get a truer compass reading. In wandering around the city, it is generally easy to orient yourself because you can see Mount-Royal from almost everywhere.

The Mountain's East Side

Originally named Ville Marie, the City of Montreal derives its current name from the mountain—Mont royal, the royal mountain. Our district, the Plateau Mont-Royal, runs east off the Mountain and Park Avenue, Saint Laurent Boulevard, Saint Denis Street, Christophe Colombe Avenue, and Papineau Street were trails at some point in time which ran parallel to the Mountain’s east face, down to the first settlements on the edge of the St.Lawrence River. This is the district where the B&B is located. It’s also home to a good many of the 100,000 students that attend Montreal’s four universities. The Mont Royal Plateau, commonly referred to as “le plateau” is the most diverse part of Montreal. Formerly a blue-collar, Catholic, French-speaking arrondissement, it presently boasts the highest concentration of people in Canada. There are 80,000 people living within a three-square kilometre area, with very few highrises.

French is the language of daily life here. Most people, notably the young, speak English fluently and Spanish is also frequently heard and spoken.

The Métro

Built for the Expo 67 Montreal World’s Fair that commemorated Canada’s Centennial in 1967, Montreal’s public subway/underground system works. It’s safe, clean , affordable, and dependable. It’s the primary means of transportation for many of us urban dwellers. The nearest Metro station is Mont-Royal. A Montreal City Map of the Metro System is free of charge at most Metro Stations. Simple to use, the Metro runs from 06:00 hrs to 01:00 hrs 7 days a week. Weekend service is not quite as frequent.

Buses

The Telbus Automated Information Service works well. Each bus stop is assigned a telephone number, which let you access a computer voice message giving the time the next bus is due to arrive at the stop. Bus service generally is good and reliable. A Montreal City Map of the Bus Grid and Métro system is free of charge at most Metro Stations.
